From Brakkefontein to Aberdeen
Aberdeen developed on the farm Brakkefontein after permission was granted in 1855 to establish a new Dutch Reformed congregation separate from Graaff-Reinet.
The farm was acquired for the new settlement and a village grew around the church. The name Aberdeen honoured the Scottish birthplace of the Reverend Andrew Murray.
The settlement developed into a town whose homes, churches, civic buildings, streets and cemetery today provide an unusually rich record of Karoo history.
Important chapters
Early title deeds
Original title deeds for land on which Aberdeen would later develop date from the early nineteenth century.
A new congregation
Permission was granted to establish a new Dutch Reformed congregation and Brakkefontein was acquired for the settlement.
A town takes shape
Properties were sold to early residents around the church and a Village Management Board followed.
An architectural legacy
Houses, churches and civic buildings from this period created much of the historic character still visible in Aberdeen today.
South African War
The conflict profoundly affected Aberdeen and the surrounding district. The town's cemetery remains an important historical record of this period.
